Chef Ramsay in Marietta, Georgia

On our way to Florida we had a much anticipated visit with Maureen and Ramsay. Since his retirement, Ramsay has taken an interest in cooking. This developed from a conversation he had a few years ago with a fellow traveller on one of their trips. Ramsay was advised to get Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. He did, not realizing that Maureen already had the original books.

A French dinner must have the requisite baguette to accompany it.

Ramsay has been perfecting Julia Child's Boeuf Bourguignon which we are about to try. He noticed that the recipe can vary. The one from the television series (which he rented) is slightly different from the one in the book. Here, he is concentrating on the last touches.

Lots of mushrooms in this Bourguignon.

Ready to enjoy a delicious repast.
And it was!

This is Maureen's "Thanksgiving" Cactus.
American Thanksgiving is next week. Thanksgiving dinner will be at Geoff and Lakey's with the timing geared to Harper's schedule. Sounds familiar. Our Thanksgiving dinner was geared to Ella's schedule.

I quite like the white kitchen cabinets.
Maureen has hopeful plans to re-do the kitchen. It is meeting with a positive response because Ramsay would like more counter space.

Should I buy Dad the same cookbook for Christmas?

Not only do we have both of Julia Child's cook books (if not their book covers, they are so well used), but dad cooked (using Julia's 6 hour long recipe for Coquilles St. Jacques) for two gourmet dinners before you were born!

Ramsay is a relatively "Johnny come lately" to gourmet cooking - although admittedly more enthusiastic right now.

These days, since your mother has expanded her cookbook collection to (maybe) 100 cookbooks over the last 30 years, I content myself with washing up after her (she does use every pan in the house when she cooks, so it is no small job) plus cooking simple BBQ dishes at home and fish dishes at the condo (e.g. last night I prepared Cajun grouper).

Dad
Your dad sure tries to get a lot of mileage out of the one time he ever followed a recipe!

Mom
Maureen can't comment here but she said that "Johnny come lately" is cooking dinner for Michael and Samantha on Friday.

P.S. Paul would like to point out that Ramsay's first name is "John".

Before we were born, that was almost 40 years ago! Seems like quite awhile ago that you like did a gourmet meal. How about you try doing one while over here next time (I promise to put lots of pictures of you preparing it on the blog). Way to go Ramsay! Maybe someday I will get to try one of your gourmet meals, sure looks good (although without the mushrooms for me please).
Megan says that your dad must have peaked early.
