Solomon Islands... The People

If we were near a village, people would come out to see us,

I think that we were the entertainment.

At every village we stopped, people came to sell their fruit and vegetables. The dive boats had given them seeds years ago and guaranteed that they would buy the crops or sometimes, the fish they had caught. This was the largest floating market.

The shell jewelry was intricately made.

Kellie, the dive master, bought armloads of orchids from the floating market.

As we came ashore to visit this village, the children were there to greet us with their flowers. They also hoped to sell them.

The Solomon Islands are known for the carvings that the people do. Villages that we visited knew we were coming and had the carvings laid out for us to buy.

I really liked this table but could not figure out where I would put it in our house.

Paul is obviously pleased with the carving of the manta ray that he decided to buy.

This village put on some entertainment for us. These boys are preparing to do a warrior's dance.

Although there was a lot of confusion, there was also a lot of enthusiasm. Several costumes were lost during the dance.

As you can see, the children in the audience were enjoying the performance.

Part of the entertainment was showing us how they used to make fire by rubbing a stick on the bigger piece of wood. This was a race to see who could do it the fastest.

The houses in this village were neatly arranged. School was an hour's walk away in the next village.

Some houses were on stilts.

Wow the flowers are impressive. I really like the orchids. Did you buy anything else?
I bought napkin rings that look like sharks and carved wooden salad servers. Your dad bought the big stuff, a turtle and a manta ray. Nice carvings, but I don't know where we will put them.

I love the picture of the child holding the flowers. What a beautiful face.
I like the table you were thinking about. A glass top on it would have made it an interesting side table.
