By the way, these seemingly slow dragons were right in the middle of a village and were well fed. Environmentalists had convinced the Indonesian government to ban the centuries old practice of feeding goats to the dragons to appease them. Two years ago, a dragon killed a young boy in the village. So, the villagers started feeding the ones close to their houses again.
Between us and the dragons was a park ranger with a long stout forked stick. The sluggish seeming dragons in the movie can actually run as fast as humans for short distances. The idea is that, if one attacks a park guest, the ranger will get in front of it and "deflect" it.
Another reason for running fast is that they are cannibals and will attack smaller dragons for food.
The dragons also swim well. We saw one swimming from a large island to a small one.
p.s. I think the last hiker killed in the park was a Swiss who ignored warnings about the dragons and went hiking by himself.
To make the most of the nice fall weather which was about to end, Megan suggested we meet for a walk at the Brickworks. Because there is a market on Saturday, it was difficult for Paul and I to find parking. We had to wait until we could find someone who was leaving. In the photo Tom is on a wall above the valley of the Brickworks, which was a quarry in the past for the red brick of Toronto. Tom, Megan, Paul and Paul on the wall. Megan’s Dutch tandem bike was of interest to some of the market goers. No problem parking with a bike.
On Friday Paul and I, Carole and Roy went to Gary’s new place on Sturgeon Lake near Fenelon Falls. Gary is a member of the Toronto Bicycle Network (TBN). His children and grandchildren like to visit. Carole and Roy took their bikes and firewood for Gary. Paul and I brought our bikes and Charles (also a member of the club, and a minister) Charles was minister at this church one summer. There are 4 churches, each a different denomination, in one block in Fenelon Falls Next we visited the local farmer’s market to check on the butter tarts. We then rode10 km on the trail to a chip wagon for lunch., plus 10 km return. Charles is not going very fast these days. It was a very slow ride. BUT …the next time Charles comes, Gary will take him on his ATV. (Gary has a few of them) After the bike ride Gary took us for a boat ride on St...
