School Reunion

For the David and Mary Thomson high school reunion on the weekend of May 2nd., our friend, Judith Cowan, came to stay with us. I first met her in Grade 8. We went to West Hill Collegiate for Grade 9, as did Paul.  The year Thomson opened, Judith and Paul went there for Grade 12.  Judith is an author and has had two books  of short stories published. She is now working on a novel. In addition she has won the Governor General's award for poetry translation.

Judith brought her new Nikon SLR camera with her. While she talked to Paul in the living room, I practised taking photos with it so that we could find one she could use as an "official photograph" for Culture Mauricie in Trois-Rivières. I think this is the one she chose.


Judith and Paul knew Anne Lazenby from high school. I knew her from Sunday School. I remember her saying then, that she wanted to be a doctor. I think I said that it would be too hard to do. Anne became a doctor, found that people liked to talk to her, and consequently decided to go back to school for four more years to become a psychiatrist.

Judith, Anne and I had something else in common besides our classes. We were the redheads. I'm still trying to keep mine a semblance of red.

What years did you attend West Hill Collegiate? I went to West Hill Secondary in Owen Sound and the concert band (of which I was a member) did an exchange with West Hill in T.O.

September 1956 to June 1961.

I started with violin and ended playing string bass in the band. I don't remember going to Owen Sound.

I was in high school from 1961-1966 so you were slightly ahead of my time. When I was in the band, I played French horn and then onto trumpet.

We gathered with Mark’s parents and Megan Paul and Tom at Mark and Margot’s place in Barrie. I did a selfie with Josh’s phone. Josh and Ella Megan, Paul and Tom wore masks when they were not eating Note Tom's special mask Mark's parents, Dolores and Bob At the table. Unfortunately my head is in front of Tom. Bob and Dolores had stayed there to look after the dogs while Mark, Margot, Joshua and Ella were in Europe. During that time, Bob, looking for something to do, washed all the wine glasses in the chandelier. Margot bruléed sugar on top of the pumpkin pie. It was the best ever. Disappearing fast! The salted caramel apple tart, which Margot also made, had an extra good flavour. Guess who cleaned up!

A November Walk

To make the most of the nice fall weather which was about to end, Megan suggested we meet for a walk at the Brickworks. Because there is a market on Saturday, it was difficult for Paul and I to find parking. We had to wait until we could find someone who was leaving. In the photo Tom is on a wall above the valley of the Brickworks, which was a quarry in the past for the red brick of Toronto. Tom, Megan, Paul and Paul on the wall. Megan’s Dutch tandem bike was of interest to some of the market goers. No problem parking with a bike.

A Busy Week

On Friday Paul and I, Carole and Roy went to Gary’s new place on Sturgeon Lake near Fenelon Falls. Gary is a member of the Toronto Bicycle Network (TBN). When the large winterized cottage came for sale beside his cottage, he decided to buy it and sell his house in Toronto. He has kept his original cottage as well. His children and grandchildren like to visit. Carole and Roy took their bikes and firewood for Gary. Paul and I brought our bikes and Charles (also a member of the club, and a minister)  Charles was minister at this church one summer. There are 4 churches, each a different denomination, in one block in Fenelon Falls Next we visited the local farmer’s market to check on the butter tarts. We then rode10 km on the trail to a chip wagon for lunch., plus 10 km return. Charles is not going very fast these days. It was a very slow ride.
