Ghent
Tuesday June 5th: The group stayed on the boat in the morning and cycled in the afternoon to Ghent. In the group of 16 there are 12 Australians and we 4 Canadians. Although this is the 4th time I have been to Ghent, there is always something new to discover in this lovely, lively University town.
While Paul stayed on the boat after supper, I went with the Australians to visit a rather unusual "pub". When we entered the place which was crowded with bicycles , lanterns, clothing and junk, the grizzled owner said, "The place has been closed, but you can sit over there." It was clearly a fire trap. After one of the Australians handed me a beer and the owner ascertained that we were not from the police, he let us walk among the piles of junk. A penny-farthing bicycle was on one wall as well as a bicycle that had been used by the army of Napoleon the 3rd.
