Maastricht, Netherlands June 2, 2012
Maastricht is a prosperous University town in the Netherlands on the Maas River where Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands meet. Many young people come to Maastricht from elsewhere because of the "pot" in the "coffee shops. This is the reason for the recent change of law in that only the resident Dutch can buy cannabis legally. On the train that we took from Liege to Maastricht there were many young people coming to enjoy themselves for the weekend. One young Polish fellow said that he had lost his ticket and had no money to pay for another ticket. The train the stopped at a station on the outskirts of Maastricht and the conductor said that the police had been called to check everyone's I.D. Everyone waited for quite a while; then people started leaving the train including the Polish guy without money or appropriate I.D. We boarded the train on the next track since it was going into the city centre. The conductor told me that this happens every day.
Above is a view of our hotel on the Maas River.
On Sunday before we left for our cycling trip there was a procession of Catholic Knights through the old city of Maastricht.
