Monday June 4

Today we were to cycle to Antwerp. In the morning we did about 10 km in the rain. Looking for the place that to meet the boat, we got to experience the slimy, viscous Flanders mud. Since it was still raining in the afternoon, we elected to stay, on the boat but the hardy Australians in the group rode into Antwerp. In the evening Onno, our guide took us for a walk around the town

In the public square, there is a statue of a man throwing a severed hand. Apparently, that is what the Belgians did to their enemies in times past

On the way back, around the corner from the red light district, we visited a local pub, Den Haan. Belgian cherry beer goes down well. Paul didn't go on the evening walk.

Interesting way to commemorate a victory...

Huh -- according to Wikipedia, one possible source for the name Antwerp is from "Hand warpen" -- hand throw.
Our guide says that the name "Antwerp" is older than the legend.
